Tapering is good

1 May

Half marathon tapering.

Not this type of tapering…

The Flying Pig is on Sunday so that means that I am drinking my weight in water, eating a few more carbs (thank you free doughnuts at school), and not really working out.

I did, however, check out my apartment building’s gym.  My Runkeeper app did not like the location of the gym.  It told me that basically I was Usain Bolt.

Me thinks not.  I am pretty sure that it’s physically impossible for me to run 9 miles at a two-minute pace.  Tapering that is not.

Five Thing Friday

8 Mar

Happy Friday!

1) My day started out with a pretty good omen…

Free cookie! Maybe it will be a good day.

A post shared by @ erag82 on

Don’t look at the fact that the cookie is broken in half.  Just realize that I got this cookie for free!  For free people!

2) I got not one, not two, but three emails from different stores saying they missed me.  They then gave me coupon codes to use on their sites.  Stop trying to make me spend money I don’t have!

3) Obligatory cat shot

He was very excited about seeing birds.

4) I watched The Master last week…holy crap Joaquin Phoenix does amazing crazy.

What’s he drinking out of that beaker?  Basically paint thinner mixed with some other chemicals and a dash of alcohol.  Nutso

5)  This weekend starts the longer distance training for the Flying Pig.  It’s a necessary evil, emphasis on the evil.  I know I have to do it, but it really sucks getting started.

It’s that time again…

6 Jan

Time to start training for the Flying Pig Marathon!

I did 3 miles on Saturday and then today I ran/walked another 6.   I tackled this beast:cameraroll-1334255437.854645

Twice.  I went up and down twice.  Why?  Because I’m crazy.

Also this weekend I finally saw Django.  It was a quintessential Tarantino film.  Lots of blood, good score/music, and Samuel L. Jackson.  Seriously though folks, it was really good.  Oh and Leonardo DiCaprio is pretty much a jerk with a lot of money and too much time on his hands.  Art imitating life?

Because of all the training that will be going on; I am going to reinstate yoga Monday.  So if any of y’all have any good yoga routines I should try let me know!

Hope you have a great few hours of your weekend!

Carb loading in Cincinnati

5 May

What’s up Pig people?!

It’s the day before the Flying Pig Marathon and we are getting ready to head down to Cincy!

A question some of you may be asking is where do I eat?  Well….  Last year mom and I ate at Via Vite and Nicholson’s for lunch and dinner.

In years past we’ve eaten at Sorrento’s,  Betta’s Italian Oven, and Teller’s

If you want a pre or post race snack I would most definitely say go to Graeters!  It’s seriously the best ice cream ever!

Wherever you go today I would probably suggest making reservations.  It’s Cinco de Mayo weekend and people are going to be everywhere.  So either get there early, make reservations, or be prepared for a bit of a wait.

If you want to know how to get ready for the Pig check out my previous post!

See you at the Finish Swine!

How to prepare for the Flying Pig

4 May

1) Paint your toes a festive color

2) Check to make sure that you are registered. Please note that this us number two. Painting your nails is much more important.

3) Check the forecast like a crazy person!

4) Drink plenty of water. No fainting or feeling ill on race day allowed! Seriously, I feel like I could swim to Cincinnati by this point.

5) Taper. Do some running or walking, but don’t decided to walk a half marathon today for the Pig on Sunday!

6) Have/make a really cool t-shirt!

7) Carb load the day before. This is your chance to eat pasta and bread and not feel guilty!

8) Bring your poncho, that way it won’t rain.

9) Tell your friends, neighbors, mom, dad, old college roommates to sign up for the Pig Tracker.  That way they’ll get updates on your awesome splits!

10) Just relax and have fun.  Come race day your adrenaline will be pumping and everyone will be cheering you on!

Oh and don’t worry about pottys there are plenty of those, but just in case…

Good luck all you Piggies!  I’ll see you on race day!!

Taper Tuesday

1 May

This is my taper week for the Flying Pig.  So that means some walking, just not a whole lot.  I walked a total of two miles today; to the drugstore and back.  It felt kinda weird not going for longer…

In prep for the Flying Pig I figured y’all would want to know the course for the half marathon.  I mean why not!?

I love, love, love this race.  As I think I’ve said  before, we’ve walked this race since 2004. We started in honor of my grandma and it’s still about that, but also the tradition of doing the race.

School News

One of our students thought this week was Teacher Appreciation Week (it’s next week in case you want to buy me something;) and baked all the teachers cinnamon rolls.  I like to call that a happy accident.  I will certainly be enjoying a yummy cinnamon roll tomorrow morning!

April Foodie Pen Pals!

30 Apr

This post is being edited by Bond…

Ugh, he’s such a stickler for grammar!

It’s the end of the month, so that means…Foodie Pen Pals!

Look here, and here for past entries.

This month I was paired up with Lily over at Eating For Excellence. I told her I was up to try new things and she sent me a couple of things I’ve been interested in trying!

This is take two of this photo.  When I got Lily’s box I immediately took a picture of everything, she even had a cute note!  When I went to upload the photo this week…totally gone!  So while Bond is my blog editor, my camera is apparently my photo editor.

Onto the box!

Snacker Jack’s Popcorn- I ate some of this the other day, super delicious!  It has tahini and sesame seeds in it!  (I almost wrote Tracker Jackers Hunger Game obsessed anyone?)

Dark Chocolate bars x2 – I have already eaten one of the bars, which was dark chocolate w/raspberry I believe.  I love, love, love dark chocolate!

Odwalla Protein Bars – I love Odwalla products and their bars.  I haven’t yet tried their protein bars so I was excited to have three to gorge myself on!

Chia Seeds – This was one of the things I’ve been wanting to try.  I always see them on blogs and have heard how good they are for you.  Super excited to try them out!

Pecan Butter – Another thing I wanted to try.  I’ve had almond butter, hazelnut butter, but that’s as far as I’ve gone.   Tomorrow morning’s English Muffin may or may not have some Pecan Butter slathered all over it!

Cliff Bars x2 – In the picture is a Chocolate Brownie Bar.  I stuffed the Cherry Chocolate Bar in my carry on bag for my wedding travels.  It’s a good thing because it was the only thing I ate coming back from Columbus!

I loved the box Lily put together for me.  Thanks Lily!  If you want to see what I did for my pen pal, check it out over at Foodasaurus Rex!

If you are interested in becoming a Foodie Pen Pal, which I think you should…  Here are the details!

On the 5th of the month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treatsThe spending limit is $15The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you can choose to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
– Foodie Penpals is open to US, Canadian residents & UK residents.  Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa. So, I’m going to keep two separate lists and match US w/ US and Canada w/ Canada!

***If you’re in the UK, please contact Carol Anne from This Is Rock Salt at rocksalt@thisisrocksalt.com to get involved!

Have a great Monday!

Oh!  I have less than a week ’til it’s Pig time!  I’m looking forward to it, it may even decide not to rain.

I’m a decathlete!

12 Apr

That’s what you call someone who’s walked or ran ten miles, right?  No?

Oh well, I did really walk ten miles today.  I’m trying to up my mileage so that I’m ready for the Flying Pig.  So far I think I’m up to 26 miles for this week…I think I’m doing alright.

Today was a great day for a 10 mile walk.  Just look at the sights!

I went to First Landing State Park and did the Cape Henry Trail, for a total of ten miles.  It was the perfect day, if not a little windy.  The high today is supposed to be 59 and I think it was around 55 when I was walking.  That’s comfortable, right?  Some dude thought that he was in the freaking tropics and was taking a leisurely stroll with no shirt on!

It was not warm enough for that!  How was he not freezing??

In making friends wherever I go news;  I really made a runner mad today.  She was running right at me, on the wrong side.  If you run, walk, bike…a lot you know there are certain rules to follow and that you stay on a certain side of the trail or path coming and going.  She was on the wrong side.

I was feeling stubborn and in my groove so I wasn’t moving.  She got closer and closer and had to swerve at the last minute.  Throwing her hands up in the air and giving me a nice scoff on her way past.

Sorry…you were on the wrong side.

Happy Thursday!

Ya learn something new…

11 Apr

Every day!

That is so true!  Especially today.  Today the insurance companies finally got their respective acts together and my car is going to be fixed!  Hallelujah!

As I was making phone calls back and forth between his insurance company, the dealership that’s going to fix my car, and the rental car company; I learned something.  I learned that my car is undriveable.  Yes, it’s true.  Was I driving my car all this week and last?  Why yes of course!

As I was talking to the lady at the dealership so nonchalantly said that they would be towing my car since it was undriveable.  What!?  Unbeknownst to me, if your car would not be able to pass the Virginia State Car Inspection, that means you should no longer drive your car…So basically I was an illegal driver for about two weeks.  Awesome.

Right now, my car should be getting an estimate and then, with any hope, it will be fixed.

I also learned that the mailman thinks he can park any damn where he pleases.

He parked in spot, if you didn’t know.  Oh and when you get mail that says DO NOT BEND in big all caps, bolded letters…Yeah, just bend that envelope all out shape, it doesn’t matter.

Venting over

I’m getting ready to go on another long training walk for the Flying Pig.  They so nicely reminded all of us in an email that we should be going for longer training runs/walks this week.  Thanks Flying Pig!

Good morning Virginia Beach!

7 Apr

Just so you know, that is being said like this:

Not this

The reason for such exuberance?  Well, look at this view!

Flying Pig Training update

I did four miles this morning taking the route I hated, but it has a great view.  I didn’t go the whole route, so it wasn’t too bad.  On Thursday I did 3 miles going the same way, but turning around before it got all noisy!  The reason I keep going this way is that it has a hill!  Hills are a little hard to come by here in the Tidewater region, however, I know Cincy is all about ’em so I gots to keep the endurance up!

(I was trying to find a picture of the “mountains” of Cincinnati to show you guys, but apparently the good people of Cincinnati don’t want to share such photos…)
