Better late than never!

22 Jul

Guess what y’all!? I got my foodie pen pal box! I don’t know if the post office wanted to chow down on my goodies or if my apt complex just felt like holding it hostage…but I got it!

20130722-115748.jpgMy penpal was Jessi who writes some nutrition articles over at aroundtheplate.    Jessi is from the wonderful state of Michigan.  No bias there…

006Okay, maybe a lot of bias.  I was so happy to look in the box and see that the items she included were all from Michigan.  She even gave me a Michigan cookie cutter, so exciting!

Also in the box was: blueberry salsa, a rootbeer cookie mix(which I had to hide so some people didn’t decide to eat it raw), honey, Leelanau coffee, and some tea that was from an upstate spot.  I’m so excited to try all of my goodies!  Did I mention I was excited?

You guys should totally check out Aroundtheplate as well.  It’s got some pretty cool info on healthy living, recipes, and nutrition.

If you are interested in participating in the Foodie Penpal experience check out The Lean Green Bean for more information.

And just to end things on a rockin’ note:

5 Thing Friday

14 Sep

We shall see.  I don’t know if I’ll make it to 15, but I’ll try!

1. This!

Pretty awesome.

2. My day started off on a completely wonky note.  I got to school early to work on some stuff for a meeting and complete data collection.  10 minutes in I got a call from a parent and it completely switched my day around.  The meeting was moved up 2 hrs and I lost all semblance of my morning.  Oh and I had another meeting that I forgot about 5 minutes after getting the morning phone call.  Ugh.

3.  I made two new recipes for my #Foodie Penpal.  I’m very excited about both of them.  They are delicious and both vegan. Double score!  I used Peas and Thank You’s recipe for Pumpkin Molasses dough balls. So delicious and got me in the mood for Fall!

4. Kids writing.  I just love it.  Some examples:  “Subway Eat Fresh!”  She wrote that and then busted out laughing.  So I went over, she showed me what she wrote, and busted out laughing again.  (Talking about asking if your friend has superpowers) “If he says no then bummer.  If he says yes then you say one of these things: yippee, cool or O-M-G.”  I love the manual on what are appropriate reactions to hearing your friend has superpowers.

5. I need to find a way to motivate myself to get out of bed early before school so I can work out.  I keep promising myself Starbucks or fancy pancakes, but neither of those things are working…

Except my brain is well aware of what I’m doing and only wants me to go back to sleep!

Do you get up in the morning to exercise?  How do you do it?

Happy Friday!!

Hi Spider!

13 Sep

My name is Michael.(name changed)  This is how one of the first graders introduced himself to the spider in the bush outside today.  He then proceeded to tell me all the different types of spiders, what they do, and of course mentioned that Kirby had a spider.

I’ve had a pretty exciting couple of days.

I went out on a school night!  Who does that?  Oh right, people with lives…hmmm.  But going out on a school night is not the only exciting part.  I went out and saw Kelly Clarkson!

Kelly was awesome!  She actually sings during the concert, no lip synching there.  She also goes full-out on everything.  Kelly pretty much sang all the songs off of her last album, which was great!  Then she covered Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Fun’s “We Are Young.”  Pretty flippin’ sweet!

It was great to go out and do something and get some time with the girls!

Oh!  The other great thing about that night?  We got to sit under the awning because our lawn seats would have been soggy.  How cool, right?

#2 exciting thing…

If you know me, you know I love Reese’s Cups…this ^ is just icing on the cake!

#3 exciting thing, and maybe just to me… A new route to train on.  My new route takes me by all the fancy, expensive houses by the little inlets and bays.  These houses are crazy big…I’m pretty sure my teacher salary will never allow me to buy one.

I’m going to try some new recipes for my #Foodie Penpal tonight.  This is also exciting because I get to taste test everything!

Happy Friday tomorrow!

Weekend update

10 Sep

Back to the grind today, but the weekend was pretty sweet.

I did a little of this…

Isn’t it nice that the local middle school built a track up the road just for me?  It sure seems that way.  Whenever I go there, no one else is there.  I walked to the track, which is about 2 miles, then ran a mile around the track, and walked back home.  It’s a good workout.

For some reason Mother Nature has been wanting to interrupt my workouts the past couple of days.

Luckily I came away unscathed this time!

My Foodie Penpal this month is a vegan.  So I tried out this recipe from Trans- Planted for chocolate chip cookies.  Mine didn’t turn out as round as hers.  I also think I would have added another tablespoon of flour to the batter.  But, am I going to continue to eat them?  Ummmmmm….yes.  Next up I have a recipe for vegan pumpkin spice cookies…we shall see…

I went to the health food store to pick up a couple of things and found this beer!

It’s very similar to a beer I had while at the OBX Brewing Station.  I was so excited to find it aaannnd it’s organic.  Double thumbs up!

Today is a day off from running, plus I’m dragging.  I slept with the windows open, crazy for these parts, and am not quite used to all the outside noise yet.

I think I also need to know what’s going on outside at all times…

Peace out!  What did you do over the weekend?

Highs and Lows/Foodie Penpals

31 Aug

Now, I don’t want you to think that my Foodie Penpal was a low…that was not the case!

It’s Friday and my last weekend before school starts up again.  I’m excited for the new school year.  There are a lot of changes, most of them good!

High: For lunch today we were treated to Bravo’s!  It was so delicious!  Very thankful to have such a yummy meal!

Low: I started the week with this

Yup, real classy looking.  That’s how I walked into school on the first day of teacher work week.  So what did I do?  Well, it was either Fight Club (oh wait, you do no talk about Fight Club), my new (not really new)gen ed teacher is really mean, or I was trying to get into my car and duck out of the way of a tree branch and the car door won.  If you guessed the last choice, you’d be right.

High: Food Penpals!  My penpal was Sam over at SexyFlexi.  She gave me an awesome Foodie box!

Start at the left: chocolate roasted almonds S’mores, apple chips, Seaweed snacks, Madras Sambar, Vegan sprinkles, Cracked Pepper Jerky Stick, and last but definitely not least a twisted cheese croissant from Homeboy Industries.  Let me tell you, that croissant did not last long.  Pretty much as soon as I opened the box…I inhaled that croissant, sooooo good!

High: Continuing on from the Foodie High…  Sam made the ingenious move and included Wes Anderson movie quotes to go along with all the foods.  I seriously gasped and did a little happy dance when I saw that.

Croissant – “How do you say “grilled cheese” from Hotel Chevalier.  Jerky – Anthony “cracked” and when to the nuthouse from Bottle Rocket.

Madras Samba – Indian Food from Darjeeling Limited.  Vegan Sprinkles – “I’d like to order some ice cream for my daughter please” from The Royal Tenenbaums.  Sea Snacks – “I’ve been out to sea for a long time” from Rushmore.

Dolphin Endangered Species Chocolate – “Son of a bitch, I’m sick of these dolphins” from The Life Aquatic.  Somehow I don’t have pictures of the apple chips (which I ate as a snack at the airport) and the almonds…  The quotes were: “The boy is being held in an apple crate on top of a gun cabinet in the attic of the Bean Annex” from Fantastic Mr. Fox and “Because what’s camping without S’mores?” from Moonrise Kingdom (which I still need to see).

I loved that Sam did that!  It was totally cool and I loved it.  Did I mention I loved it?

High: Sunsets, they are just perfection

Welp, I just got back from a walk.  The first one since I slammed my face into the car door.  I’m gonna chill have some din din and declare tonight movie night!

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Get into the groove

29 Aug

Hey there!  It’s been a spell!  Did you enjoy reading Roxanne’s post about her #Foodie Penpal box?  Don’t you want to join now?  It’s a lot of fun and see you don’t have to be a blogger!

Anywho, it’s been super tough for me to get back in the working groove.  I know, I know, such a difficult problem to have.  There are some other things that are making it difficult, but I’m not going to go spreadin’ it around the Internets.

Why not share some pictures of my trip to Michigan that didn’t get posted?  I think it’s a grand idea.

They don’t enjoy wine tasting at all…

Mom trying out all the chairs

Twas a good trip, which always makes going back to reality all that more rough.

Tomorrow I’ll post my Foodie Penpal goodies that I got from Sam over at Sexy Flexi.

See y’all later!

Foodie PenPal Guest Post

28 Aug

Hey everyone!  I’m Roxanne and I was lucky enough to be Emily’s recipient for this month’s foodie penpal!

A little about me:

  •  I currently live in New Haven, CT land of really good pizza, Yale University and the birthplace of the hamburger
  • I am training to be an oncologist- just 2 more years to go!
  • I am the owner of a 20lb orange cat (or miniature tiger) named Benny who is a living, breathing advertisement to adopt a shelter pet.
  • This was my first time taking part in foodie pen pal and I was lucky enough to be matched up with Emily!

So let’s cut to the chase on the amazing package I received in the mail and proceeded to devour almost immediately!

oh yeah! that’s a collection of delights!

In no particular order:

Luna Bar(s) there is only 1 pictured, or to be more accurate, 1/2 of one because i already ate the other one (white chocolate macadamia) and was half-way through scarfing this one down when i was like- oh crap! i need to take a picture of you! (forgive me folks i am not a food blogger and frequently eat before i photograph 😉

anyway, in case you didn’t figure out by my inhalation of them, the luna bars were yum! i’m so glad they came in my package, because to be honest with you, after luna discontinued my favorite flavor, chai tea, i felt my love for them wane.  But white chocolate macadamia and caramel nut brownie have definitely brought it back!

popchips- sour cream and onion

OMG THESE ARE SO GOOD! i love them! there are like 2 chips in the bottom of the bag.  i especially love them dipped into greek yogurt. mmmm.

annie’s snickerdoodle bunnies

Both adorable and delicious- great with chai!

kiwi-pineapple fruit leather

#1 look at the color of these fruit leathers:

a lovely shade of green

And the smell! The tangy smell of kiwi and pineapple- it does that little pricking thing to my salivary glands (you know that feeling, when you eat something sour) as a lover of sour things, these were right up my alley.  And the best thing is it tastes like real fruit, not overly sweetened fake fruit.  Thumbs way up!

Cherry-Pomegranate drink mix

I have definitely been drinking a lot of water as it is still pretty warm up here and i don’t have central air.  This helped switch up the plain water to something sweeter, fruitier and pinker.

Cajun Snack Mix

salty with just a kick of spice… and it has those sesame sticks in it- you know what i’m talking about! those things are the bomb!

Chia Seeds/Water Bottle

cutest water bottle ever… ignore my craziness.

Seriously- this water bottle is adorable, i actually said “awww” when i saw it.  I think it’s the roundness.  Inside the water bottle, although it’s hard to tell are chia seeds in water.  I AM SO GLAD EMILY SENT ME THESE! That statement totally deserved all caps and here’s why: I always saw these in the store and heard about them, but i was always too intimidated to buy them (they come in pretty big packages… what if i didn’t like them?)

Well, fair to say I like chia seeds- I’ve been putting them in all my drinks- iced tea, agua fresca, water, smoothies… they are so good and i actually really enjoy the gel texture.  So glad that Emily sent me these- now I know I’m ready to buy the big bag at the store!

So to wrap up- I’m so glad that I took part in foodie pen pal this month and got matched up with Emily- it was so great to try some new things, as well as some favorites and stuff I hadn’t eaten in a while.  Hope you guys enjoyed my (first!) blog post!

And because I’m a (bit of a) crazy cat lady- here’s some furriness to brighten your days!

Foodie Pen Pals July

31 Jul

What’s up?  Still watching the Olympics?

You know I am!

But serioulsy, #foodiepenpals!

This month I got paired up with Jillian over at Bites of Balance, check her out!

Needless to say Jillian hooked me up!

I saw those cheddar bunnies on top…and I knew I was going to love this box.

So what did Jillian pick out for me?  Take a look.

A tower of chocolate atop some black bean soup.  Seriously, look at that chocolate!  It didn’t quite hold up in the insane heat we’ve been getting, but nothing a little time in the freezer couldn’t fix.

On top of the tower are peanut Sun Drops, kinda like M&M’s, but without artificial colors or preservatives.

Nestled, are two Ghiradelli squares, yum already.

Next  is a dark chocolate cocoa nib bar (my favorite brand Endangered Species)and below is a pack of almond butter cups.  I stuck all of it in the freezer and was good to go!  So good to go that I’ve already eaten all the chocolate except for the Ghiradelli…  What can I say, I like chocolate.

Next up!

Annie’s Extra Cheddar Bunnies.  I love Annie’s products and these bunnies were delicious!  They were great snacks during work.

Jelly Belly beans, took these to work with me.  They helped me get through squirrel/owl arguments.  Jillian sad that she would go on factory tours of the Jelly Belly factory and actually doesn’t like them, but put them in anyway!

Panda soft cherry licorice.  I had never had this brand before, but I’m a fan.  It was cherry without being crazy sweet.

Peets Coffee.  I love to try new coffees.  As soon as I’m done with the stash I have now, I’ll be putting this into rotation.

Two different Peanut Butter Co. packs.  I’ve never seen little packs like this before.  It’s the perfect way to try a new flavor without buying an expensive jar that you don’t like.  Not that I’ve met a peanut butter I don’t like.

Underneath the peanut butter is a packet of Cocoa Cardio.  You just add the packet to hot water like hot cocoa.  I’m interested in trying this out!

Jillian also included a cute little vintagey San Fransisco magnet.  I love little things like that.

Thank you Jillian for all the great goodies, I’ve already made quite the dent!

If you think you are interested in Foodie Penpals, check out Lindsay’s website!  She’s an amazing lady who sets this up every month.  Check her out, she’s pretty rad!

Foodie Penpals June

30 Jun

It’s one of my favorite times of the month!

Foodie Penpal reveal day!  This month I got paired up with Heather over at For the Love of Kale.  She sent me a great package!

Let’s take a gander: Pizza Flax Snax – I was a little skeptical, but they totally do taste like pizza!, Justin’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups – These were a semi fatality due to the crazy heat wave.  Don’t worry, I popped them in the freezer.  Good as new! Popped Apple Chips – I already have a love affair with apple chips, these are no different.  I could seriously eat the whole bag in one sitting.  I had a little self-control this time and only ate half the bag.  Lastly, a protein powder.  This one is specifically for recovery.  I’ve never used protein powders, I probably should, especially after long training walks/runs.  Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thank you so much Heather!  Your pen pal package is almost all gone!

If you want to participate in the fun that is #Foodie Penpals, check out Lindsey’s blog!  I highly recommend it!

Highs and Lows

29 Jun

It is that time again ladies and gents!

Cab Calloway is the best!

Low: Chigger bites, they suck!  I’m pretty sure I got them on our adventure time on Pea Island.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about chiggers are little mites that bite you, leave a red welt or bite, and said bite sticks around for weeks.  They can be itchy and just down right annoying.  The bites also get aggravated when you are hot…so glad we are having an insane heat wave…

High: I found somewhat of a solution to the chigger bites.  Tea Tree oil.  I made a spray bottle of it, which I sprayed on my pants and laundry from OBX.  Also, I put a dab of it on all my bites which helps with the itching madness.

High: Wes Anderson is has made a new movie!

I love me some Bill Murray and Edward Norton.  I’m not so sure how I feel about Bruce Willis…

High: I got my #Foodie Penpal package in the mail today!!

Low: Part of it got melted in the oppressive heat…  Don’t worry I have a plan.

High/Low: I’ve had to close all the blinds and curtains so that I heat stays out.  It’s kinda cozy, but also makes me feel like a vampire…

What are your highs and lows?
