Foodie Penpal!

31 Jan

I apologize now, this post is very random, but filled with very important things!  Kinda like me!

First off, I participated in a foodie penpal program set up by TheLeanGreenBean.  She came up with the ingenious idea of sending foodie gifts to other bloggers and readers.  This was my first time, but I was super excited to participate.  I got a box from the lovely Amanda at

In my box: tea, Green and Black’s Peanut and Sea Salt chocolate bar (kinda tastes like Reese’s Cup, love!), cherry honey, and two Kind bars (apricot macadamia and blueberry pomegranate and nut) the apricot/macadamia might be my new favorite.  Thanks so much Amanda!!!

I also got to give a box to another blogger, specifically Darlynn at Little Blog Dress (her website is great and very helpful/informational)

If you think you’re interested in the Foodie Penpal experience:
-on the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. it will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-you will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. on the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-the boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! the spending limit is $15 the box must also include something written. this can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-you are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-foodie penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. if you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. if two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.

if you’re interested in participating for February, please send an email to lindsay and include the following information:
 -your full name
 -your email address
 -your blog name/address (if applicable)
 -your twitter handle (if applicable)

Contact  Lindsay  by February 4th as pairings will be emailed on the 5th.

🙂  I loved doing this and am already signed up for this month!

I got my second bottle of wine from the Virginia Wine of the Month club:

A red table wine by Veritas, a local Virginia Winery (duh).  It was quite easy to drink and I really enjoyed it!  I will be on the look out for it when I’m out and about (when I used to go out…;)

I bought my first pomegranate this weekend (they were on sale!)

I then tried to depomegranate them.  I saw tips that said get a bowl full of water and they’ll just come out…or just cut a few slits down the side then smack them with something, the seeds will come right out.  I tried both methods…the seeds did not just come right out.

What I ended up doing was submerging them in water and then used my fingers to pick out the pomegranate seeds.  It worked, but I know there’s got to be an easier way!

Help a girl out!!

Happy random Tuesday!  Tomorrow is Hump Day!

Are you excited to be over the hump?

Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine…

30 Jan

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend?  Mine was pretty decent, I walked 6 miles on Sunday!  Go me and to boot it was a new route! (Ha, I’m a poet!)  It’s fun to find new ways to get around a place you thought you knew all about.

For this Musical Monday, I am not going to talk about shows I’ve seen, rather shows I want to see!

1.  The Book of Mormon

This musical looks hilarious.  I have the soundtrack downloaded on iTunes and I’ll catch myself cracking up while running/walking

I’d definitely take my mom, I think she has some preconceived notions about Mormons… Also, I had to turn off the video because the doorbell rings were freaking out Bond.

Everything okay in there?

2. Memphis

Why?  Um, I don’t know because now Adam Pascal is in it?  Honestly, I find the history around how music, especially “race music” got on the air and all the controversy around it.

3. Porgy and Bess

Audra McDonald’s voice is ahmazing!  Oh and I love Gershwin and Norm Lewis…

4. Million Dollar Quartet

Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis; need I say more?

If want to hear the real Million Dollar Quartet:

Now this is just my list of shows that are actually out.  Maybe next week I’ll have my fantasy list!

What would be on your list for this year?

Hank Gets a Little Yoga Treatment from Yogi Victor on King of the Hill

30 Jan

Daily Cup of Yoga

I know this clip’s a little old, but I love the heck out of this scene from King of the Hill. While Yogi Victor (Johnny Depp) is quite the crude yoga teacher, he clearly has Hank’s best interests at heart… Who knows, Hank might even learn how to “breath through his feet” once he gets a tank-top. Talk about some great lines…

Hank walks into class:

Hank: Uh, hello, I was wondering if yoga could help my back because it hurts like all…

Yogi Victor: Let me tell you a story. Once I was like you–skeptical, near-sighted, paunchy–then I met a special friend. This glorious friend took me to places I thought I’d never…

Hank: Eh, excuse me, is this one of those stories where this special friend of yours turns out to be yoga?

Yogi Victor: What time do you evacuate your bowels?

Hank: What?

Yogi Victor:  There’s only one…

Five Thing Friday

27 Jan

Yeah, I changed to five this week…I was struggling for 15 last week.

1. We had a staff day today.  Which means that the teachers still had to go to school, but the students didn’t.  We are supposedly getting our report cards and grades done.  Supposedly…I was at school until 3:20 and I feel like I did nothing!

2. I got new shoes today!  Let me clarify, the former tenant got new shoes today!  They are from Foot Locker, I’m sure they are nice, but sadly, not for me.

3. Downton Abbey is getting good!  If you don’t watch it than a)you have a life and aren’t an old lady that watches PBS (like me) or b) just aren’t cool enough to understand the complexities of British aristocrats in World War I.

No not those aristocrats…

If you don’t understand what the above photo means…I am NOT going to tell you.  You’ll just have to Google it and find out.

There is a slight difference

4.  Since it was a staff day today, there were no students.  Except when I showed up this morning, there was a student.  The same student who is late pretty much everyday.  But, now for some reason, her parent decided to drop her off to school early…on her day off.

5.  The girls in our classroom have seemed to have made an, “I hate _______” club.  It’s really not cool.  Why are girls so mean?  The really bad thing is that one of the co-founders is supposedly the namesake’s best friend.  She joined because when she was trying to get ____’s attention in gym, _____ actually did what she was supposed to and participated in gym and ignored her friend.  Crazy right? Yah, pretty Mean Girls for them, don’t ya think??

Hope y’all had a wonderful evening.  I rounded mine out by watching The Debt.  Good movie and of course Helen Mirren is wonderful in it!  But, I also really enjoyed Jessica Chastain and Sam Worthington, good job on both accounts!

Have a great weekend!

More wine?

25 Jan

Don’t mind if I do!
Guess who got more wine?
This girl!
It is a Veritas Red Table Wine. I am very excited to try it! I really enjoyed my bottle of champagne, so I know this will be tasty too!

It really said US Navy…

23 Jan

…but hey.  I work with what they gave me, okay!

I really don’t like days like these…

It makes me want to curl up and go back to sleep.  Which is really difficult when you are supposed to be teaching elementary students.

Why not talk about a lively fun musical to brighten things up!?

In The Heights is a musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda.  It’s set in the Washington Heights neighborhood and follows the stories of Usnavi (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Vanessa (Karen Olivo),Nina (Mandy Gonzalez)  and Abuela Claudia (Olga Merediz).

Usnavi (get it US Navy-Usnavi??)is desperately in love with Vanessa and spends the entire show trying and succeeding to make it so.  Nina was the, “one who got out” and went to Stanford.  Turns out that Stanford is harder than she thought and she returns to  Washington Heights head down, only to fall in love with Benny who works for her father’s cab company.  Abuela Claudia has been a fixture of Washington Heights since anyone can remember and just wants to have a good life.  When she wins the lotto things change for everyone!  I don’t want to give everything away in case, you want to see it…but that’s about it in a nutshell.

Lin-Manuel wrote the musical and it is partially based on some of his real life experiences.  Lin is an amazing lyricist.  The rhymes he pulls off are humorous and heartfelt.

96,000.  This is pretty much the bloodline for the entire musical.  Everyone just wants to win so they can get out and have a better life than the one they have now.

When You’re Home

A nice little love song between Nina and Benny.

No Me Diga

A little insight as to what hair stylists really talk about.  I have no doubt this is really what goes on…

Song about Abuela’s death.  It reminds me of my Grandma Marie.  It’s a soothing song and almost meditative…

Okay, so there ya go!  If In The Heights is touring near you, I would definitely go see it.  It’s up tempo and happy.  I think this PBS Great Performances clip says it best…

And just for giggles, this Lego Blackout video is pretty great!  Like it just made this gray day so much better.

Hey facebook friends.  I’m so glad you like to read my blog and like the things I’m writing about.  It’d be extra super awesome if you could comment and like it here on WordPress.  It helps get my blog name out there!

Thanks!  You all are great!

Me 🙂

15 thing Friday

20 Jan

Trying to relieve some Friday stress, so why not talk about me?  Right?

Now, don’t get this confused with, “10 Things I Hate About You”

Great movie by the way…

It’s fifteen things about me!

1. My favorite movie of all times is, “The Princess Bride”

I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen this movie.  My friend Anna and I would watch this movie pretty much every single weekend for months on end.  While watch it we would stand on the arms of the couch and then throw ourselves onto the couch while saying, “Oh Wesley!”  Over and over again….who wants to date me now!?

2. I am an excellent whistler.  It’s true, I promise…just ask anyone.

 3.  Ever since moving to Virginia Beach, I have become a big pansy about the cold.  I’m not exactly sure when this happened, but it makes me a little sad.  I grew up in Michigan and Ohio, not exactly tropical.  In Michigan we would go to school with 4ft snow drifts and snow still on the road.  Here if there’s even a chance of snow, there’s no school.

See look!  I am standing on a frozen lake!  True, I may have on two pairs of pants, three shirts, a jacket, scarf, gloves and a hat, but I’m on a frozen lake!

4.  I think that kids are a very good judge of character.  If they think you’re weird…well you probably are.

5. I am horrible at math and I really didn’t like school all that much up until junior high.  Which is odd because that is usually when people start to hate it.  It’s kind of odd that I decided to become a teacher.  I did it because I had a wonderful band teacher in 6th grade and an amazingly talented chorus teacher in high school.  If it wasn’t for them…I don’t know what I would have been.

See look! I love high school!

I am not, by the way, the one smiling or giving a thumbs up.

6. I have an owl tattoo on my right side.  Is in memoriam of my Grandma Marie, who loved owls.  It’s like she’s always on my side and I love it!

7. I loathe condiments.  Seriously.  I have only just started to maybe be okay with mayonaise.  They’re really just kinda gagworthy to me.

8. I am super excited about this!

Joseph Gordon Levitt, Christian Bale, and Ann Hathaway!?

9. Over the Rhine is one of my favorite bands.  Yet I didn’t really listen to them until I left Ohio…strange…

I could listen to her sing the phone book

10.  Ugh, this is hard!

11. One of my favorite quotes from this week came from a Kindergartner walking down the hallway.  He said, “I am the only normal one here!  Everyone else is so strange!”  He then proceeded to walk down the hallway with his pelvis stuck out and his head back.  Sure kid.

12.  I do think that my cat is trying to kill me…

13. I am so excited for my best friends wedding!  I think it is going to be awesome and I can’t wait!

14. While watching the news this morning.  I saw this story.  Basically I women, drunk, drove around a school bus and plowed down 4 people!  Really!?  What are you doing drunk at 7 AM?

15. My guilty pleasure as of late has been Downton Abbey.  I feel like an old lady watching it, being on PBS and all, but I’m totally into it!

C’mon Matthew pull yourself together!  You know you don’t want to marry that two timing chick!

Happy Friday Y’all!

I’m depraved on account I’m deprived…

16 Jan

Any guesses as to what that is from??

I was thinking of making the title of  post with, “I gotta social disease!”  But I think people might get the wrong idea.

I can remember hearing West Side Story growing up.  My mom had the cassette version of Jose Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa singing it!

I think it was something like 6 cassettes long…

I didn’t really understand it then, but I knew that the music was pretty.  Going on and going to voice lessons, my voice teacher gave me the song, “I Feel Pretty” to sing ( Spoiler this is not my favorite song from West Side), but it did get me interested in the music again.  I got the Original Broadway Cast Recording of West Side, starring non other than Chita Rivera and loved it!

Sidenote, my mom and I saw Chita in her one woman show when she came to Cincinnati.  Even in her 70’s Chita is still amazing!  She danced like I will never be able to!  Love her!

Moving on…West Side Story not only has amazing songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, but beautiful and innovative choreography by Jerome Robbins.

Okay, so favorite songs:

I like how the stories overlap and the melodies are all intertwined.  Bernstein knew what he was doing.

Gee Officer Krupke

Really, I love all the songs from West Side, really.  They are all pretty perfect for the modern-day Romeo and Juliet that plays out in the streets.

I was lucky enough to see the revival with my mom in 2009.  Matt Cavenaugh (Tony), Josefina Scaglione (Maria), and Karen Olivo (Anita) rounded out the cast.  Needless to say, they were all amazing. I had seen Karen Olivo in, “In the Heights” and loved her voice and sass.  She didn’t disappoint as Anita, there was plenty of sass to go around.  Matt Cavenaugh really surprised me with his voice, it was powerful, but at the same time innocent, clean and clear.  Josefina was amazing!  The notes she could hit were mind-boggling!

Do you have a favorite West Side character or song? (Mom??;)

Theater Thursday!

12 Jan

No sooner do I get a new blog idea/concept up and going, that I forget about it.  Remember how I said I was going to do Musical Monday’s?  Well I didn’t!  Because this Monday, I didn’t blog about music at all!

So continuing on with my Adam Pascal obsession…

I’ve seen this show… a lot.  This is the show where I actually met Adam Pascal.  It’s an Elton Rice jam, so the music is poppy, happy, and even a little schmaltzy at times, but very singable.  Sometimes the lyrics don’t exactly make sense or are difficult to figure out the meaning, but hey, it’s just a musical!

Aida follows the story of Aida(Heather Headly) (duh), Radames (Adam Pascal), and Amneris (Sherie Rene Scott) in a love triangle.  Aida is a Nubian princess who is forced into slavery by Radames.  Radames is engaged to be married to Amneris, the flighty, quirky Egyptian princess, but soon falls for Aida.  Radames must make the life altering decision to either marry Amneris and be set for life, but unhappy or confess his love for Aida and be buried alive…harsh right?  SPOILER ALERT  Radames confesses to Amneris that he doesn’t love her, but he does love Aida.  Aida and Radames are thrown in a tomb and buried alive!  Dramatic right?

My favorite songs from Aida are:

Elaborate Lives

Love it!  I love Adam’s voice in this!

My Strongest Suit

This song is great, because it is so ridiculous (and I mean that in a good way)!  I’m sure all Egyptian princesses just had a runway in their bedroom and strut their stuff all over the place.

Written in the Stars

I mean come on, beautiful voices!

Okay, I could sit here and watch videos all day, but a girl’s gotta have priorities…like eating!

Next time maybe a little Chorus Line or West Side Story??

Guess who’s excited!?

10 Jan

This girl!

Yesterday I finally got to UPS to pick up my, “signature of person over 21 only” package.  I knew what is was going to be…wine!  Leanne signed me up for a wine of the month club and I got my first present.

I do enjoy my wine….

I didn’t know what kind of wine I was going to be getting, only that it would be Virginia wine.  Well guess what?

Champagne!  Barboursville Brut to be exact.  I’m excited to try it and see how it compares with some of my other favorite champagnes.

What else?  I mean nothing will be as exciting as that…;)

What is your favorite type of wine?
