I thought this post by Seconds was interesting… I had a conversation during the school year with an occupational therapist trying to set a goal for a student about this. She wanted the student to have handwriting (cursive), specifically a signature for a student. She was quite perturbed to learn that we don’t teach cursive in school. We don’t, we really don’t. So much is going the way of computers. The students’ basically take all of their tests on the computer. A new test was introduced this year that was all writing and guess what!? It was on the computer.
I can remember learning cursive in elementary school, it was hard! I’m not saying this because I think that cursive should not be taught. I have a signature that I use to sign checks, when I use checks…and to sign paperwork at work and school. Other than that, I do not use cursive! Is it a little sad to see cursive go the way of quills and ink? Maybe…,but, as they say, we are preparing our students’ for the 21st century… and they aren’t using cursive.
