Sham Rock on!

20 Mar

Yesterday Leanne and I did the Shamrock 8K.  I, of course, had to do the pre race ritual of putting everything together the night before.

Take 1, Bond was helping.

Take 2: shoes, sports bra, sports pouch, long sleeve tech shirt, socks, race number, pants and obligatory green Shamrock shirt.

When I do this I always feel like Billy Madison for some reason… “…I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight. Ohhhh, back to school. Back to school. Back to school.”  I don’t know why.

Pre race breakfast was a wheat bagel with almond butter and a banana.  Can’t change it.

We got up early (6:30) so that we could get down to the oceanfront to get a good parking space.  One of the upsides to get up early on a Saturday morning by the beach, are views like this.

There was a visit to the lovely porto potties, because, well, you know why.

Even the potties are in Shamrock spirit!

We took some pre race pictures…

We did some stretching.  Did you know that by doing some yoga poses like wide legged forward fold, down dog, and regular forward fold before and after a race helps?  It really truly does.  I was so amazed when I did these poses the first time.  Really!

After our impromptu yoga class we headed to our corral.  Surprise, surprise, we were not in the last corral!

What's up Corral 5!?

There was another corral behind us, what are the odds?

The gun went off and we waited…for about 10 minutes.  Why? Because this was in front of us.

Hello corral's 1-4!

It’s really not that bad.  You just have to realize that you will not be starting with the gun and all the other Kenyan’s.  It was a good race.  We had about a 14:48 pace, which is not too shabby.  We finished in an hour and 12 minutes.  I’m pretty happy with our time.  This was our first race back in and it felt good to get moving again!

Overall, the race was fun, super crowded at the beginning, but after about mile 2 things spread out.  The weather was pretty perfect, a little drizzly at the beginning, but not an issue.  At the end of the race we were walking by these two ladies, on of whom named Shirley.  Shirley’s friend really wanted to run all the way to the end, but Shirley was not feeling it.  Her friend kept yelling for her, “Come on Shirley!  We can do it Shirley.  Just grab my hand Shirley!”  She was so motivating that people watching started yelling for Shirley, it was pretty good.

Today we went for another 8K (almost).  It’s time to get motivated and the training up!  How do you stay motivated during a race?  I’ve got my bud with me!
