Anthony Bourdain

27 Feb

Somehow in updating y’all on our trip to NYC, I never told you about Anthony Bourdain.

You know Anthony Bourdain, right?  Snarky author and traveler of the world?  I think he’s pretty damn awesome.  Well, he came to Norfolk the weekend before Valentine’s Day.

We didn’t quite know what to expect when going to this.  I mean, were we just going to sit there for two hours while he berated us for watching the Food Network?  Who knows!?  Turns out, no, he was not going to berate us, rather he was going to berate other people.  You know, which is cool with me. 😉

He started off by talking about Food Network personalities.  A particular host came up to him at a swanky party and manhandled him and basically made him feel uncomfortable for a good portion of the evening.  That person would be Sandra Lee.  He doesn’t pull any punches when talking about her.  It’s clear that he doesn’t like her.  He basically feels she is the anti-christ.  If you ever want to see a bad, bad idea for a cake; check out Sandra Lee (Kwanzaa Cake).  You won’t be sorry.

He talked about other Food Network people such as Bobby Flay, Ina Garten, Morimoto, and Alton Brown; saying how much he really did like them. However, he hates he new Iron Chef and the only reason he thinks it’s doing well is because of Alton Brown.   He also talked about how much he loved/loves his time on Top Chef.  Anthony (yep, we’re on a first name basis) also said the worst Top Chef meal he ever had were Dale’s butterscotch scallops.

He then moved on to talk about his own show, No Reservations.  He had a set of rules that he feels everyone should follow while traveling and eating; including respecting food, trying everything at least once, and respecting different cultures.

Other topics he hit:

vegetarians – why would you deny yourself from eating delicious animals?

PETA – this was especially good since PETA’s headquarter is in Norfolk

The weirdness that surrounds Ina Garten’s marriage to Jeffery

Drug use

His family – why he decided to jump on the organic and “green” food movement because of his daughter.

How much her curses

When in New York the one place you should eat is Katz’s Deli and have the pastrami sandwich on rye.  *Side note we tried to get to Katz’s but we never could quite make it over that way.  Pastrami fail.

I really enjoyed listening to him speak (Although the second half of his talk was a little soap boxtastical).  It wasn’t what I was expecting and that’s a good thing.  Yeah, he threw a lot of f bombs and other explicatives that I can’t repeat here, but what else would you expect?  Mild mannered business man?
