I’m Lovin’ It

13 Mar

Oh yes, I am…

Shamrock Shake in ma belly!

That just happened and it was worth every calorie.  I then proceeded to run for a half hour and walk to the grocery store.  I think it all balanced out.  Right?

What else am I lovin’ right now?  A little J. Timberlake.

He was absolutely hilarious on SNL this past weekend.  He should really be a regular cast member.  That’s totally doable, right?  Anywho.  He is on Jimmy Fallon every night this week.  Last night, he brought sexy back.

Great.

Five Thing Friday

8 Mar

Happy Friday!

1) My day started out with a pretty good omen…

Free cookie! Maybe it will be a good day.

Don’t look at the fact that the cookie is broken in half.  Just realize that I got this cookie for free!  For free people!

2) I got not one, not two, but three emails from different stores saying they missed me.  They then gave me coupon codes to use on their sites.  Stop trying to make me spend money I don’t have!

3) Obligatory cat shot

He was very excited about seeing birds.

4) I watched The Master last week…holy crap Joaquin Phoenix does amazing crazy.

What’s he drinking out of that beaker?  Basically paint thinner mixed with some other chemicals and a dash of alcohol.  Nutso

5)  This weekend starts the longer distance training for the Flying Pig.  It’s a necessary evil, emphasis on the evil.  I know I have to do it, but it really sucks getting started.

Hello 2013!

2 Jan

Have you started off your 2013 on the right foot.  I’m still not used to writing 13 on everything…I’m not really sure if I like it.  However, I’m not going to look at the 13 as bad luck, it’s going to be a good year!

School News

We have a three-day week, so I’m already off.  I thought today was Monday pretty much all day.  The kids were pretty decent, some complaining about how they wished they were still in bed.  Me too kid, me too.

Some gems that were overheard today:

“My dad gets so many phone calls!  He’s so busy.  He gets like ten phone calls a day!”

After letting one of my students eat a gingerbread man

S – “I think he’s trying to kill me!” (while holding her throat and screaming)

MG- “Nope, I’m pretty sure you just need some water…”

Food

I’m making White Turkey Chili tonight for dinner.  The recipe is for White Chicken Chili, but I figured turkey would be a good substitute.  I’ll let y’all know how it turns out.  It smells amazing so far!

I hope your 2013 is off to a great start!

Five Thing Friday

28 Dec

Happy Friday! I have been enjoying my final day in Ohio by using up gift cards and making delicious Cheddar Scones. Really, they are da bomb! I put a note on them that they were terrible and that no one else should eat them, lest they want to suffer awful stomach pains. I don’t think it’s going to work…

Okay here we go!

1) My family members are horrible enablers.  Yes it’s true.  Just take a look:

What is in Emily’s Emergency Drawer you ask?  Well take a gander:

Yep, it’s sideways, I can’t figure out how to make it go the other way.  Anyway, in the drawer there is a pair of pajamas, $1.50, a pack of gum, a pair of socks, and yep you see correctly a three pack of underwear.

How am I ever going to learn how to pack correctly if they keep giving me things…;)

2) Which Wes Anderson character are you?  Just in case you were wondering, I am Francis from the Darjeeling Limited.

3) I got the new Ben Folds Five album for Christmas.  I love it.  I’ve listened to it three times already.  The first song on the album is Erase Me, I’m obsessed!

4) We went and saw the movie Hitchcock tonight.  It was good.  Very well played by Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, and Toni Collette.

5) I don’t normally talk football on the blog, but the past two bowl games I’ve watched and been ridiculous.  I’m looking at you Virginia Tech and Cincinnati!

Exactly.

Welp, I hope y’all had a great Friday.  Don’t get snowed in!  I’m going to try to skip town before I do!

Thanksgiving Part 2

23 Nov

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I know I did!

Thanksgiving started with my brother and I running in the Charlotte Turkey Trot 8K. We finished in 57 minutes, not too shabby. Also, Jimmie Johnson was running in the race right in front of us, craziness!

Next on the list is to watch the Lions play football. Now, as a Lions fan, I don’t expect much. This game was just ridiculous. I think my heart stopped like 5 times. If you want to read about it, the freep had a pretty good article summing up the insanity of the game.

After burning off many calories due to stress, it was time to eat!

Starting at the top: stuffing, mac n cheese, sweet potato bread, brussel sprouts with cranberry, and sweet potato casserole. We also had turkey (of course), cranberry relish, and crescent rolls. Definitely not enough food for four people.

Andrew doesn’t have a dishwasher, but who needs one!

Notice how I am not in the picture. Whoops!

Thanksgiving day was ended the only appropriate way I know…by watching Channing Tatum try to convince Rachel McAdams to be his wife.

For some reason this has been a Channing Tatum weekend. On Friday we watched 21 Jump Street…dumbest movie ever, but can help but laugh. I think it was rounded out well by watching the Muppet Movie beforehand.

It was a great Thanksgiving Day and I am so happy to have spent it with my family!

This weekend is brought to you by…

1 Oct

…the word police!

Exciting, no?  Don’t worry it’s not all bad.

This weekend I went to visit my brother who lives in Charlotte.  My parents also came down and my brother’s girlfriend was also there, so it was a good weekend.

The weekend started off with the cops.  The reason being construction and lots of it.  Pretty much every road I had to take to Charlotte was under construction thus many, many cops were present.

When we got to Charlotte and were headed to dinner at Harvest Moon Grille, guess what?  More cops!

Homeland is filmed in Charlotte and we think that’s what we were seeing.  It was a convoy of about 10 cop cars, a stretch Escalade, and a stretch limo.

As we were eating dinner a couple of cop cars would speed around the corner, lights and sirens blazing, then just stop.  Hoping it was just for a scene…

Here’s the kicker.

On Saturday night, we were just sitting down to eat at Andrew’s house.  We then heard a loud thud, thud.  Andrew immediately went to my parents car to take a look.  A girl while talking on her phone and possibly drunk hit my parents car.  Awesome.  She hit the car with such force that it did something to the rear and front axle making the car undriveable.  Even better!  Guess what this equation equals…more cops!

Luckily my brother’s neighbors were coming home after a walk, saw pretty much the whole accident, and had the license plate number.  A cop came and took a statement and said they were going to cite the girl with leaving the scene of a crime.

So there, see?  Totally brought to you by the word police.

The rest of the weekend was great and did not involve police of any kind.

Look!  I have photographic proof!

Wait that’s a lie.  When we took a walk to look at this monument and Vietnam War Wall, we saw a guy getting arrested…

Okay, other pictures!

Andrew took us to the Triple C Brewing Company and we had a beer sampler.  Good beers and a really cool place!

That box of goodies is from Sweet Lorraine’s Bakery in Charlotte.  I tried the peanut butter and jelly cookie and the Sweet Lorraine (the one that looks like a giant chocolate chip cookie) and both were delicious!

I’m so angry at you!

27 Sep

No not you, but… Raise your hand if you know what I’m talking about?  I think I see 3, maybe four hands.  Good times.

Other awesome things about today:

I multi tasked today by baking blondies and working out.  counterintuitive? Nah, that’s just plan smart.

memegenerator.net

I paid $2.40 at Jiffy Lube today.  Yep that’s right.  The service was originally $76, but I had a Groupon! Haha!  Take that!

The local wine shop recently started carrying a local champagne (I guess it’s sparkling since it’s not from France…right?) that I love.  This is so excited.  Cheap bubbly wine for all!

I finally got my chalkboard paint craft worked out.  I know have a chalkboard in the kitchen.  Now I can write notes, recipes…what not.  I can’t help but notice it.  Again, very excited!  Oh, it’s the little things in life…

5 Thing Friday

14 Sep

We shall see.  I don’t know if I’ll make it to 15, but I’ll try!

1. This!

Pretty awesome.

2. My day started off on a completely wonky note.  I got to school early to work on some stuff for a meeting and complete data collection.  10 minutes in I got a call from a parent and it completely switched my day around.  The meeting was moved up 2 hrs and I lost all semblance of my morning.  Oh and I had another meeting that I forgot about 5 minutes after getting the morning phone call.  Ugh.

3.  I made two new recipes for my #Foodie Penpal.  I’m very excited about both of them.  They are delicious and both vegan. Double score!  I used Peas and Thank You’s recipe for Pumpkin Molasses dough balls. So delicious and got me in the mood for Fall!

4. Kids writing.  I just love it.  Some examples:  “Subway Eat Fresh!”  She wrote that and then busted out laughing.  So I went over, she showed me what she wrote, and busted out laughing again.  (Talking about asking if your friend has superpowers) “If he says no then bummer.  If he says yes then you say one of these things: yippee, cool or O-M-G.”  I love the manual on what are appropriate reactions to hearing your friend has superpowers.

5. I need to find a way to motivate myself to get out of bed early before school so I can work out.  I keep promising myself Starbucks or fancy pancakes, but neither of those things are working…

Except my brain is well aware of what I’m doing and only wants me to go back to sleep!

Do you get up in the morning to exercise?  How do you do it?

Happy Friday!!

I love wine

24 Aug

Wine, wine, wine…

Michigan has a great selection/area for wineries.  Today we set to the wine trails and visited three nearby.

We started off at Sleeping Bear Winery in Albion MI.

Sleeping Bear is a cute little winery/brewery/restaurant.  Before we had our wine tasting we sat down and had some food.  They have a menu of sandwiches, apps and pizzas.  I had the Pesto Chicken Panini, but with spinach instead of chicken, delicious!  After lunch we had a wine tasting of seven wines.  The Sleeping Bear wines all have cute pictures on the front (a deal breaker for me;)  The verdict, Sleeping Bear Wines is a keeper.

Next, we went across the street to Cherry Creek Winery.  Cherry Creek and Sleeping Bear are owned by the same people.  A great selling point of Sleeping Bear tasting is that you get to go across the street and have a free wine tasting at Cherry Creek.  This is a good bit of advice if you want two for one wine tastings.

I’ve been to both Cherry Creek Winery locations (both the schoolhouse and Albion).  The schoolhouse location is a little funkier (in a good way) than the Albion location.  I was a big fan of Cherry Creek’s cherry wine.  We can’t really get cherry wine in Virginia.

After Cherry Creek we decided on one more winery.

We got back in the car and headed north to Chateau Aeronautique.   We went to the Chateau last year when I had my Groupon for a private wine tasting.  Lorenzo wasn’t there this year, but it was just as good.  They had four brand new wines that weren’t there last year.  Pretty exciting stuff!

Chateau is situated on a small air strip that the owner, Lorenzo, holds small festivities throughout the year.

I loved all three wineries.  At no point did I feel out of place or that the vinters were talking down to me; which can unfortunately happen from time to time.

I also need to give a big shout out to Michigan by the bottle.  They have a great website and app if are interested in traveling Michigan’s many wine trails.

I’d have to say, all in all, today was a good day…

Things I know for sure

23 Aug

1) 50 degree temperatures are much nicer to walk/run in than 90 degree temperatures with 98% humidity.  Fact.

2) Baseball games are awesome!

4) Donuts are a perfectly viable and acceptable “snack” after taking a hike on a nature trail.

5) The smell of bug spray kills your sense of smell for a good hour after you wash it all off.

6) The Duck Tales theme song is still pretty awesome…
