No words Wednesday

29 Jun

As promised, because I know you were all waiting with bated breath, I am sharing the last of my vacation photos.  I am so glad that we have made it a tradition to go to the OBX as a family and that the family comes to the OBX!

Mom, Dad, Auntie Anne, Phil, Leanne, Andrew, and Sarah

"Looks like a big ol' beach..."

“I’ve never seen so many electric jellyfish in my whole life!”

Okay, so maybe not electric jellyfish, but jellyfish nonetheless.

As a side note…it tooke me six times until I could get the picture of the jellyfish uploaded.  Maybe WordPress has a thing against jellyfish, or using movie quotes, or Owen Wilson, or Wes Anderson….

The A-mah-zing…..

28 Jun

Emily!  What, no?!  Oh, okay it’s the a-mah-zing Seth Rudetsky!  Seth is hilarious and has a vast musical background and knowledge.  He’s written two books…

I took this picture from Seth's website

He’s a host on Sirius/XM Broadway, plus he also does great deconstructions of different broadway songs and has a vlog (that’s a video blog get your mind out of the gutter).

Seth posted two of my favorite musical clips on his website.  One involves the wonderful Raul Esparza.  I first saw/heard Raul in Company.  They had a run in the Playhouse in the Park in Cincinnati and there was no way I was going to miss out!  The stage was basically just a square with a few props on the stage.  The audience surrounded the stage on three sides.  I went with my mom and we had pretty sweet seats.  Raul was amazing as were the other cast members and they definitely deserved that Tony.

Anyway, back to what I was saying…  Seth had Raul sing Defying Gravity for a benefit called Miscast.  He basically pulled out his audition book and making actors sing songs that were the opposite of them.  Raul got Defying Gravity…

Pretty cool, eh?

Next!  In the Heights.  I’ve spoken of my love for In the Heights and Lynn Manuel Miranda before and this little gem is a-mah-zing!

This is Josh Henry from IN THE HEIGHTS demonstrating what he does backstage every night during the song “Home”.

I think that is ridiculous, in the greatest way possible.  What type of ear do you must have to hear that all those songs go together?  Crazy!

Tomorrow, friends, I promise that I will upload my last pictures from vacation!

I gotta pocket, gotta pocket full of sunshine…

27 Jun

Can’t help it, that song is stuck in my head.  Whenever I hear it now I think of Emma Stone in Easy A.  If you haven’t seen it, seriously you should!  High.larious!

My pocket is full of sunshine for other reasons as well…corny?  Ah well, can’t be helped, it’s ingrained (the corny, not the pocket full of sunshine).

1) I am watching Dexter season 7 and it’s so good y’all.  I love Dexter and all his crazy killing for good.  In a related train of thought, who knew Johnny Lee Miller could channel  Christian Bale in American Psycho.  He was über creepy in this season.

2) Family vacation.  The short – it was awesome and I wish it could have lasted another week.  I am so glad that I got to see and hang out with my family(this includes friends and new friends that were met on the vacation).

3) New catch phrases from said vacation, shape shifters, being afraid of butterflies, intense games of Uno, new-found love of milkshakes (specifically from John’s), and the fact that I’ll be pulling shells out of my scalp for weeks to come!

I still have photos from the last couple days of vacation that I need to upload and share; I just haven’t been motivated to do it.

Stay classy and I’ll have the photos up soon!

Are you a shapeshifter?

25 Jun

Good morning!  It’s the last full day in the OBX, yes it’s a little bittersweet.  This is the day where you try to jam in all the stuff you didn’t get to do before.  The agenda for today already includes the beach and milkshakes.

Again I’ll let you peruse my pictures, so I can have more time to watch the sunrise and listen to the waves….

Storm cloudsStorm front

Storm front

The storm that rolled in on Thursday had an amazing lightening show to go along with it.  It was literally like watching fireworks go off!  I wanted to send my pictures into WAVY10, but it was a lot more difficult than it should have been and didn’t happen.  What say you WAVY 10??

Pea Island looking toward the sound

We went for a walk at the Pea IslandWildlife Refuge, it’s pretty cool if you have the chance.  They have a bird sancutary where we saw swans, egrets, sandpipers, and an otter…  I know, not a bird, but still pretty neat!

Yesterday the family went kayaking on the Alligator River.  Did you know that this part of North Carolina is the northern most part where alligators can live?  Yep, sure is.  I was happy I didn’t see any alligators…. I’m not quite sure how I would defend myself from the seat of a kayak.

Going back to the title of the post.  There are a lot, I mean a lot of folk stories and tales that talk about people becoming shape shifters around here.  There is at least one story in every NC book in this house.  So now, of course that is the running gag of the week.  It’d be more funny if you were here…wanna come!?

Wordless…Tuesday…

21 Jun

Day two at the beach and I’m really in vacation mode…

Monday's sunset

The waves at the beach today were a bit crazy, but it’s all good, we went anyway…

Most of today was spent at the beach.  We took a break to eat, lounge around, go here…

John's has great shakes. If you are ever in the Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills area, I highly recommend it.

We only had milkshakes at John’s, but they were sooooo good.  Very tasty and they use real fruit in their shakes.  Crazy right!?

There was also a celebration to be had.

The day ended with another beautiful sunset.  This one a little later, since it’s the solstice and all.

After dinner we went to the beach and just chilled.  Later in the evening we played a very energetic game of Uno.  I…did not win.

Lovin’ life at the beach right now.  Hope y’all are relaxing as well!

Chillin’ out, maxin’ out, relaxin’ all cool…

20 Jun

Greetings from Kill Devil Hills!  It is a glorious day here and I am throughly enjoying my vacation!  There won’t be a lot of writing or maybe even posts this week, but I’ve got photos!

And the way everyone should enjoy vacation…

Catchy y’all on the flippity flip side!

The new hotness

17 Jun

And that would be….

Oh! but wait!  First I have to announce…I AM ON VACATION!!!!  Sorry, just had to get that out!

Okay, so the new hotness would be cake pops!

Oh yes, serve these at any party/classroom/board meeting…I’m sure you’ll be a hit.  I made them for our end of the year party and the kids (and some adults)loved them.

Here’s what ya do…

white chocolate discs, 50 lollipop sticks (I needed more than that), rainbow sprinkles, frosting.

By the by, the boxes underneath….I poked holes in them and that’s what I used to let my pops set and dry.  I saw other websites that used foam, but I didn’t have any.  The cardboard box worked out just fine.

A)Buy boxed cake mix.  Just do it, it’s okay, no one will tell or be able to tell the difference between the box and homemade.

B) Make said boxed cake mix as per the directions

I see you Funfetti cake and I have plans for you!

C) Break up Funfetti cake into little crumbs (after it has cooled)

D) Add almost an entire can of frosting to Funfetti cake.  I only have about a quarter cup of frosting left in the can.

E) Mix cake crumbs and frosting together

F) Eat!  No wait, that’s not the next step.

G) Mold the cake/frosting mixture into balls

H) Melt the chocolate in the microwave

I just used a 1lb bag of white chocolate disks from Michael's

I) Dip the lollipop sticks into the chocolate and then into the cake

J) Stick the cake pops in the freezer to set (while the first set is in the freezer you can be making our other cake pops)

K) Take the pops out of the freezer and coat them with the melted chocolate and whatever other extras you want

L) Once the pops are set, I put them in a big Tupperware container in the freezer.  This way they really set up and don’t fall apart.  If you stick them in the fridge, they will get goopy and all the icing and other prettiness will just slide right off.  That’s no bueno.

M) EAT!  I served them to a class of 19 children and 5 adults, by the end I only had six left.  I think they liked them ;)

They are really good, but super sugary, so be prepared for the sugar high and respective crash afterward.

Wino, why not?

16 Jun

If you’re like me…and I know you are…you have a lot of wine corks saved in your cupboards.  The question being, what to do with all those reminders of lost wine bottles?

Well an earring organizer of course!

Here’s what you need to succeed!

Hot glue gun with hot glue, wine corks, board to glue said wine corks to, and pins for earrings to hang on.

Step 1: Plan what you want the corks to look like on the board.  I think this is vital, otherwise you’ll get weird blank spots or get to the end and have an odd shape to fill.

Step 2: Glue corks onto board.

Step 3: Hang new earring holder in room… and place pins on board so that your earrings don’t fall off!

For all of my hangy earrings I used the pins, but for my studs or other small earrings that can’t hang, I just stuck them right into the cork.

I’m really pleased with how this looks and worked out.  I can see exactly what earrings I have and don’t have to go digging through my jewelry box to find them!

In school news…there is only one and a half days left y’all.  Keep your fingers crossed that I keep my sanity!

Hi my name is Emily

13 Jun

…and I am a Broadway musicalholic.  Seriously I am.  I guess it all started when my mom had West Side Story on cassette tape.  Yah, remember those!  My addiction has been pretty much non-stop since we played Phantom of the Opera one year in marching band.  I have to full Playbill binders and probably need to spread them out to four.  I may have more musical numbers on my iPod than “real” music.  I’m pretty sure that I have the lyrics to RENT, Phantom, In the Heights, and Sweeney Todd memorized.  What information had to go for all those lyrics to go in…irrelevant!

My mom, grandma, and aunt are/were really into musicals.  My mom likes to tell the story of staying up listening to Carousel on the radio.  So, I’m pretty sure it’s in my blood!

Anywhozits, last night was the Tony Awards cue The Producers, “Tony, Tony, Tony…he’s having a stroke.  Of genius!”

Yes, last night was the Tony’s.  I love to watch the Tony’s and see all the musical numbers, mainly.  It’s also fun to see who’s there and if the host is any good.  Well, lemme tell ya.  This year the host was none other than NPH himself.  Now, Neil was in RENT, Assassins, Cabaret, and Proof so he knows what’s up.  One of my favorite moments during the Tony’s was when he and Hugh Jackman battled over who was the better host.

Who is the better host?  I don’t know it’s a toss up…they’re both cute and talented…

I also thought the opening was pretty entertaining

I kinda cringed for Brooke Shields and her night didn’t get much better when she was presenting her award.

Lastly, I was super psyched to learn that Lin Manuel a la In the Heights fame was writing NPH’s closing.  I love me some Lin Manuel, he’s so talented it’s ridiculous.  Take a peek…

Oh and here’s one of my favorites from In the Heights

Love it!

Okay I could go on and on, but this post is pretty video laden.  Maybe later I’ll expose more of my inner Broadway geekness.  Oh it’s in there!

Oh Adam, I know if I could have spoken to you...our lives would be so different!

Things I know for sure

9 Jun

I’m channeling my inner Oprah today.

These are some things I know for sure…

A temperature of 97 with a heat index of 101 -107 is craziness

Being awoken at 5:38 AM because your cat thinks it’s a great time to eat…is not cool.

I'm lookin' at you buddy!

Wearing a pink Banana Republic blouse that you aren’t so sure about is a good idea.  Other people are sure about it…go with it, you look good in pink.  Embrace it!

Owning five different pairs of sunglasses, kinda makes me feel like a rock star.

There are only 5 1/2 days left in the school year!

The Outer Banks are calling my name!

The fam is coming down and up? in a week to the Outer Banks!  Get ready folks the Greguetze’s are a comin’ for ya!
